It had been steady casual work since Lahabrea's arrival to the simulation, but finally Elidibus places the finishing touches upon the home he had crafted by hand. Ever thankful in his proficiency in the arts of the hand, he had used limited creation magicks so as to not cause any unfortunate reactions within the house itself. It was located near where he lived with the other ancients, but not too near. Easy enough to go back and forth, but providing plenty of privacy between them - with trees and enough of a walk.
The blueprints had been drawn up by Lahabrea and himself jointly, the floor plan to the other man's tastes. The decorations inside are rather bare, lacking in most furniture for now - but that was a solution Lahabrea may fix over time. As Emet-Selch had made his own house in time.
Elidibus beams in delight at the completed structure, looking over at Lahabrea as they stand together. "Welcome to your new home, dearest Lahabrea."
[It doesn’t take much to rouse Lahabrea from his slumber, especially when it comes to his son. He takes a moment to comb back the errant strands of his hair before answering the door. Despite looking a bit fatigued as of late, Lahabrea still seems as imposing as ever.]
Erichthonius?
[Theres a vague hint of concern in his tone as his DTF watches from afar. The phoinix lets out a happy squawk once it sees Erichthonius, clearly overjoyed at the sight of him. The now medium-sized bird flaps its wings wildly before floating over to perch itself on Lahabrea’s shoulder.]
[ His response is almost immediate, likely prompted by the unusual three-headed bird resting on his shoulder. Lahabrea usually eats his dinner alone, although he doesn't mind eating alongside Erichthonius. It's one of the few occasions he gets to spend time with his son. ]
Do I dare ask what’s the occasion? Not that…we need one.
I'll tell you when we are seated. It's a good thing though. I promise.
[ He gestures down to the kitchen where he already has a full meal prepared. It's actually quite an attractive spread. A warm loaf of honeyed bread, baked figs, braised chicken with olive stuffing and a fresh green salad. ]
I said I would cook for you sometime. So please, enjoy.
[This handsome spread is certainly a feast for the eyes. Lahabrea can scarcely believe that his son created all this. Not because he doubts the boy’s culinary talent, but simply because he’s gotten so good at it. The braised chicken smells delicious, enough to get an excited squawk from Pyralis who believes they’re invited to the meal as well.]
All good things who comes those who wait.
[ He mutters in an amused tone before washing his hands at the sink. By the time he joins Erichthonius at the table, his phoinix has already begun to peck at a few figs. The bird does not need to eat; it is simply inquisitive about the taste. Unfortunately, Pyralis does not have a chance to try the fig. Lahabrea sighs as he removes it from her beak.]
Behave yourself.
[He warns the bird before taking a bite of the fig. To his surprise, it’s quite good.]
I’m impressed, Erichthonius. I dare say you’re a good chef.
[Now that he successfully stopped Pyralis from trying to devour everything in sight, Lahabrea relaxes a bit and simply enjoys the food. However, that doesn’t stop the three headed phoinix from trying to peck at the bread. The bird is determined.]
[ Erich watches Pyralis peck at the food, and what's more... his father gives him a genuine compliment. He can't help the smile that takes over his face, unbidden. ]
Thank you. Angeal has taught me a great deal, but I have been working hard to develop this.
[ He won't linger on his victory too long though. Pushing a small plate forward on the table, full of bite-sized fruits and bits of bread, meat and cheese. ]
[The compliment came easily because the meal is quite delicious. It's evident that Lahabrea is grateful to Angeal for teaching Erichthonius the fundamentals, but everything the young man did was on his own initiative. That alone makes him proud of his son.]
Your efforts certainly paid off well. I’ve heard you’ve been spending much of your time at the bakery.
[ He mentions this before eating another roasted fig, this time with a slice of bread. Pyralis was going to fight over the bread, but Erichthonios cleverly intervened. The three-headed bird looks down at the small saucer, confused, before giving out a pleased chirp. She greedily shovels into the food, starting with the fruits and progressing to the meats. Lahabrea observes the phoinix for a while, apparently delighted by her antics, despite his semi-permanent glower. He ultimately switches his glance away from Pyralis and back onto Erichthonius, this time with a hint of curiosity in his eyes. ]
However, I feel there's more to this dinner than you merely wanting to show off your culinary skills.
[Joy in cooking? Didn’t Emet-Selch say something similar in the past? While Lahabrea views cooking as nothing more than just another chore, he does find himself gravitating to the arts as of lately. Those sketches he would make of new, bizarre mythic wonders soon became painstakingly illustrated paintings that he would keep scattered about. While cooking is an art in own right, he never seen much correlation between the two until now. Nevertheless, he’s jostled out of his thoughts with what Erichthonius says next.]
…You proposed to Themis?
[The shock in his words is evident since he almost never calls Elidibus by his given name. Both Pyralis and he stop eating, their gaze focused squarely on Erichthonius.]
You’re getting married?
[He’s speechless. As he should be, considering his darling son is about to get married.]
I-I see. [He takes a moment to clear his throat, doing his best to avoid Pyralis’ stare. The phoinix squawks angrily at him before quickly flying over to Erichthonius for so much needed cuddles. It flies right on top of Erichthonius’ head and starts nuzzling against the boy’s bright orange hair clearly overjoyed by the news. Lahabrea, on the other hand, cannot help but smile a little.]
Of course, it would be my honor to assist you with the ceremony.
[ It's admittedly very funny to see his father get flustered so. Erich allows an easy smile to spread again with the excuse of Pyralis cuddling him. He pets the bird happily, giving it a few kisses on its head. ]
I am. And I'm so glad you want to be involved...
I honestly couldn't think of someone who I would want there more than you.
[ He puffs up, digging in his robe for a picture that he holds out for his father to take. ]
I even made his ring with my own creation magic. No help. Just me. It's a small thing but... it was a lot of work to get it just perfect.
[It's not often that the Speaker of the Convocation is rendered speechless, but Erichthonius appears to be pulling off the impossible, much to Lahabrea's dismay. He stares at the picture for a long time, mentally appreciating the band that his son gave Themis. It's no surprise that Athena's tampering has left their dear son barely able to cast even the most basic spells. However, the fact that Erichthonius has made such strides during his time here demonstrates his unwavering strength.
It's enough to make the old man feel proud.]
It's quite a beautiful ring.
[He whispers as he takes the picture.]
It has a simple yet elegant design. Even though I've witnessed allegedly grander creations, I can tell this was made with love.
[Pyralis is content with this brief interaction between father and son. Enough that the phoinix begins to coo. Lahabrea can't stand that annoying bird sometimes. Sometimes it appears to be more of a pet than anything else. However, Lahabrea does not want to ruin the mood by chasing the bird away.]
[ Erich soaks in that praise like rays of warm sunshine. In that moment, it's evident just how much he still seeks his father's approval. Wants to be someone that Lahabrea can be proud of, even just a little bit. ]
Thank you. It was... made with everything I had.
I never thought anyone like Themis would ever even notice the likes of me, and I want to make sure that everything is as perfect as it can be. To show my gratitude.
[ Ahh but now he's getting mushy. ]
Ah- sorry. Please, don't let me stop you eating more, I don't want it to go cold.
[ As if the man couldn't reheat it with a snap of his fingers. ]
[The funny thing is, Lahabrea is already proud of him. While the grumpy old man is hesitant to say it, the adoring look in his eyes speaks volumes. Hephaistos always struggled to express his emotions, even now. However, it seems that the old man is ironically finding his voice.]
I trust Elidibus wears it with pride.
[He wouldn't be surprised to see Elidibus wearing the engagement ring during his next visit here.]
Even if it wasn't perfect, he would still wear it. [He replies with a faint smile.] Perfection means little to those who love you for who you are.
Therefore, there's no need for you to chase it so earnestly.
[They've both grown in their own ways. While Erichthonios' transformation is more visible in his eyes, Lahabrea admits that a part of himself has changed as well. Perhaps it has something to do with the time he spent in this simulation, or perhaps it has everything to do with the fact that Etheirys continues to thrive without him. Regardless, he no longer feels the need to cling to his previous lofty perceptions.]
Strive if you must. However, you do not have to be perfect in my eyes or anyone else's.
[He would've never said such a thing in the past. Something has changed.]
In any case, how should we plan this wedding? I have some ideas, but as father-of-the-would-be groom, you're entitled to this honor.
[ He can't articulate how much it means to hear that, but some tension is released from his body it seems. It will be a long road to undoing the damage done, but the fact that he's willing to try so earnestly.
he laughs at the question, glad for such intense enthusiasm for the event. ]
I would hear them gladly. Themis wants to invite nearly the whole population knowing him and I would not deny him that. That said, I do not wish for anything extravagant. I want it to feel... warm. Like home.
[A few days after the desperate situation with Elidibus, but prior to the monthly Mingle post, there is a gentle knocking upon Lahabrea's door.
It is Elidibus, unannounced. A rarity for the younger man. Clearly though there are situations that have altered his usual behavioral patterns - chiefly being that it's clear he is still recovering from everything that had transpired. Now, himself once more and rested to the point where he can once again stand, he has slipped away to seek out Lahabrea. To seek out Hephaistos.
They have much they need to discuss. It's time for Themis to give answers that he really should have long ago.
And... something else, if he is still accepted.
Whatever the result, he steels himself as he waits for the older man to answer the door. He is utterly exhausted, made clear by the dark circles beneath his eyes and the pallor of his skin. The way he stands, one hand upon the door frame to support his weight. He knows he should have waited... but he could not bring himself to delay. Not when he recalled each and every moment of the ordeal with crystal clarity.
[Lahabrea was completely fatigued from all of the recent tension, so he barely noticed the knock at the door. He was quite exhausted. After attempting to console Erichthonios and others, he eventually returned to his small cottage by the beach. It's the one Elidibus created for him, brick by brick. Even though Lahabrea could have built a home himself, he appreciated Elidibus' effort. That’s why he took up residence here. Of course, Lahabrea made a bit of renovations since Elidibus built this home, but it still possessed that rather cozy vibe.
He struggled to suppress a yawn, half-noticing that his pet Phoinix had cuddled up on the cushions near him. Pyralis, too, has seen better days. His DTF has recently become quite smaller, no larger than a house cat. The three-headed bird was still sleeping as Lahabrea approached the door. While it is well known that DTFs act as windows to the soul, Lahabrea couldn't help but worry if Pyralis was as fatigued as he is. He stares at the fiery bird for a moment before opening the door. Lahabrea expected it was Erichthonios again, so imagine his surprise when he sees those bright blur eyes staring back at him.]
[Elidibus looks up, up at Lahabrea, and smiles despite how tired he seems. The moment the older man answers the door, that tender fondness appears, written all across his face. It is clear that he is fully himself once more.
But never before has his slight stature ever seemed a detriment for him. Now, weak, recovering, and exhausted as he is, that lean figure and diminutive height has him appearing almost frail. Typically his presence and personality far outweigh what he lacks in vertical measure. But currently it's lacking, though he still possesses the air about him he always has had.
[The words are spoken faster than he can process them. Even after everything that transpired, Lahabrea would never turn Elidibus away, especially given everything his young colleague had done for him and others. However, he is hesitant to touch him. Lahabrea feels as if he revoked that right after attempting to restrain Themis when he was at his most vulnerable. That is why he does not try to brush those gentle white bangs out of Themis' eyes. Instead, he gestures for the young man to sit upon the sofa nearby.
Lahabrea's room resembles the office he once had in Amaurot. He has a desk that he built himself out of local wood, two chairs, and a small chestnut-colored sofa nearby. His bed and more personal effects are hidden behind another room next to this one, just like in Amaurot. While the decor is sparse, Lahabrea's love of ferns shines through, adding a touch of green to this cozy office.]
I'm grateful to see you're doing...better.
[However, Themis' fragile state has left him stunned. The young man appears to be a smaller and weaker version of his former self. Just seeing him in this state makes Lahabrea curse himself even more.]
You have my thanks, I did not wish to presume after my excessively public episode.
[Themis is all too aware of exactly what had happened during his mental break. The memories linger in crystal clarity now, as they had while he lost himself slowly through the ages. It is both boon and curse, to possess knowledge of all of it, to retain that memory. But it means he knows the anguish Lahabrea himself had gone through in his attempts to help Elidibus - his face and voice, that despair... well. It is why he was here.
Elidibus follows Lahabrea into the house, slowly. He does not limp, not quite, but his steps are not sure-footed as they always are. His grace has returned. His strength has not. So as he makes his way to that sofa, he...
Does not quite stumble. But the exertion becomes too great for a brief moment, and he has to catch himself by grasping hold of Lahabrea's robes to steady himself. Sweat beads along his temple, and he has to take a deep breath to gather himself.
Having noticed Hephaistos's hesitation to touch him, Themis draws the correct conclusion, but attempts to not press that issue.]
My apologies. A moment, if you will. I am much improved, but still early on in my recovery.
[He does only take a moment. Then, he closes the distance to the sofa and sinks heavily onto it. Ophiuchus slithers in behind him, climbing the sofa and draping over his shoulders like a living shawl. He idly runs a hand along the snake's scales.]
[When he felt a slight tug on his robes, Hephaistos instinctively wrapped his arm around Themis. It happened quickly, but his gaze remained filled with concern even as Themis sits. Themis really shouldn't be here, he needs more rest than anything else. He is currently struggling to stand on his own two feet.
It's concerning enough to make Hephaistos wonder if he should just let Themis sleep in his bed instead. This conversation can wait, can't it?]
Too early in your recovery to be humoring a conversation with me.
[He responds with a slightly annoyed tone. However, his annoyance quickly turns to affection as he stares at Themis with concern.]
Nonetheless, I understand why you are here. I'm just concerned that your health will deteriorate without adequate rest.
[Hephaistos squares his jaw and stares at Themis with anger. 'Not his fault?' Is he mad? All of this was his fault! If he hadn't created Zodiark, Themis would not have had to endure such impossible hardships. It is his fault that he needed someone to act as Zodiark's heart to make the deity function properly. He basically sacrificed Themis to this terrible fate, and now Themis claims he's not to blame?]
An imperfect concept is the fault of the designer, Themis.
[He replies quietly with a hint of remorse in his tone.]
[Clearly Lahabrea is under some misconceptions and has assumed much about what had happened, all those eons ago. At least, the way that Elidibus has looked back upon it with his impartial eyes. This is a wrong that much be righted. Correction is needed.
Thankfully, Elidibus is the Emissary, and will never forsake his duty.
His head tips, a single brow raising in an inquiry.]
[Lahabrea falls silent after hearing Themis' question, unsure what he meant. This almost seems like a trick of some kind. If Zodiark's design had been perfect, Themis would never have lost his mind throughout the eons, and Venat would not have shattered their world into thirteen different shards. Surely everything would have been perfect if he hadn't done something incorrect, but what did he do?
This was a desperate attempt to save a dying planet. There was no time for perfection, but by creating Zodiark, he ensured their Star's continued existence. That was the only thing he could accomplish in such dire circumstances. However, was it as flawed as he believes it was?
He falls quiet, his anger dissipating into something akin to grief.]
[It is all too easy to sense the change in the other man's mood. Good. That shift is what he had needed. It was time to give Lahabrea information that he sorely needed.
And an absolution.]
Zodiark was everything he had been designed to be. A mighty feat of unparalleled design and power, utterly capable of doing the impossible. He rewrote the very laws of existence, of reality, and in doing so ensured that Etheirys would endure - not only that, He allowed the Star to flourish where it may have been rendered forever barren.
[He pauses to smile. There is eternity in that smile. Forgiveness.
Slowly, he explains Meteion. What she found, the nihilism that overtook her, and her ultimate decision to end everything.]
Ultimately my fate, and the fate of our home, was the fault of none. Had Venat not done what she did, perhaps we would have been overcome by another coming of the Final Days. She made a choice for everyone upon the star. I... do not support that massive violation of agency. But we could dwell forever on 'what if' or 'what may have been.' What we must focus on is the truth: our home was saved. Each event, every moment- all of them had meaning.
[He presses a hand to his sternum.]
I do not regret what happened to me throughout the ages. Upon my sacrifice, none knew that I could withdraw from Zodiark at all - including myself. I went to that end gladly. To save all that I loved. That I was given the chance to further assist was a blessing, more than I could have asked.
[This revelation provides Lahabrea with a sense of calm. The worries that plagued him are gradually fading now that he knows the full truth of what happened. Again, this is all ahead of his time in a dark future where all life is almost extinct. He was relieved to know that his efforts were not in vain, but he still blamed himself after witnessing Elidibus at his lowest point. However, it appears that he unjustly blamed himself.
As he leans back against the sofa cushions, Lahabrea lets out what appears to be a sigh. He is relieved, but there is still one issue they need to address. He returns his gaze to Themis, imploring him to speak.]
I...I have my opinions, but I rather hear the truth from you.
[Themis is content to speak of it. The truth is not damning, it merely was.]
When fully half our world gave of themselves to bring about Zodiark, their souls did not vanish. The same was for that additional half again to allow Him to revive the land into a habitable state.
[Pausing, he jumps ahead.]
Upon His vanquishing, so many years later by the Warrior of Light, those souls returned to the Star. They rejoined the Aetherial Sea - the Underworld - to rest, to dream, and perhaps to be reborn anew, should that be their path. But where do you believe they laid for all those untold eons between those two events?
[He taps the space over his heart.]
They dwelt within Him. As His Heart even when I had separated myself from Him in body and soul, I was still very much a part of Him. I felt when he was Sundered, when the Star was rent apart with Hydaelyn's blow - though I myself was spared of shattering. Thus we three were the Unsundered; Emet-Selch, you, and myself. That connection extended to all those souls that dwelt within him.
[Those blue eyes meet Lahabrea's red.]
Fully three-quarters of our world, our people, connected to me. Connected to my mind, my soul. I remained myself as best as I was able, but in the face of such a cacophony of voices - it is no wonder that my own would be drowned out. In the end, yes, much of myself was lost. But I did not lose my duty - I did not lose the love I held. Love has always driven me, and even though I remembered little, lost myself inch by inch, that remained.
So you see, my dear Hephaistos. None of that was your fault. We had thought I would go to my end. I remained. And though my identity slipped away grain by grain... the presence of the others was a comfort. While Emet-Selch mourned and you furiously threw yourself into our great work to save them, I held fast to my convictions - I held them within me, after all.
[This revelation is heavy. Lahabrea listens intently as Themis speaks, his eyes full of unspoken wonder. He wondered where the martyrs' souls went after they gave their lives for Etheirys' sake. While he suspected the three of them carried their people's wishes on their backs, Elidibus literally carried them in his heart. This is a startling revelation because it lends credence to Elidibus' mental breakdown. He doubts his ability to handle such a tremendous task, and based on what Emet-Selch told him about his future self, he is doomed to succumb to insanity as well.
However, that dark future doesn't matter anymore. This place, Amani, is their second chance to undo what was done. If they can work together to rebuild their world anew, then perhaps they'll be afforded a second chance at redemption.]
We've walked a lonely road together, one that has split into several different paths. While we shared a desire to achieve the same goal, we eventually went our separate ways.
[He falls silent for a moment, clearly processing his thoughts, before suddenly wrapping his arms around Themis' lithe form. He appears to have made up his mind that he will not deny Themis' touch due to misplaced guilt. He gently cards his fingers through Elidibus' hair, stroking the snowy strands.]
Though we may have all parted, even upon our own Star we found one another at long last. Did you not know? We sleep together within the Underworld - our long rest, well earned. We three Unsundered, and all those souls from within Zodiark.
[For several heartbeats Themis is quiet, still. Much like he had with others, with Lahabrea's very son, he ensures that the older man is doing this because it is what he truly wishes - not out of a sense of obligation, or of pressure. An opportunity to pull back. When Hephaistos does not, he leans into the touch, head tilting just so for better access to those well-worn hands. His own arms slip around to complete the embrace.
Though there is no tight force to pull them together, it is tender all the same. It means something.]
I forgive you. For everything. For any and all. Let that weight fall, my dearest friend, it is not yours to shoulder.
[He has something he wishes to ask, but waits for Hephaistos to steady himself. It is no small thing. The older man's previous experiences regarding the subject, too, are touchy at best. Instead...]
[Those three simple words struck Hephaistos like an arrow to the heart. They pierce through his defenses so smoothly that he is rendered speechless. While Themis had previously declared her love for him, Lahabrea was hesitant to consider it. Due to Athena's betrayal, Lahabrea grew to despise the word. However, something has changed within Lahabrea, specifically within Hephaistos. Instead of recoiling in fear or doubt, he finds himself overcome with joy.
Themis loves him. Themis truly adores him. It's a revelation that solidifies himself within his very soul—enough to make this old man nearly cry. He reaches for Themis' hand and brings it to his lips. As he gently kisses his pale knuckles, he mumbles the following:]
I love you too. [He whispers before stating it louder for his beloved emissary to hear.] I love you too, Themis.
[While their story ended on a somber note, Hephaistos is grateful that all three of them sleep together within the heart of their precious Star. His devotion to Themis outweighs the weight of eternity. The thought of possibly losing Themis makes him sad. This explains why he was so frantic when he tried to save him. While it still pains Lahabrea that he wasn't there to protect him, he is grateful for the opportunity to make amends and live again.
There is a life after Athena, and this life begins here.]
I love you so much that I cannot bear to lose you. Lets spend this life together in unison, you and I.
[It feels different this time. They had exchanged affections before, exquisite words revealing deeper feelings that never did truly feel adequate. But now Themis can see why. Can feel it. There's a greater acceptance where before there was doubt. His breast swells within from purest emotion, his hand fast entwining their fingers once he receives that kiss.
He can wait no longer.]
I fear that I have not the energy for further pursuits, but my dearest Hepahistos, I... Would you allow me to show you the truest parts of my self? Allow me to bare my soul to yours.
[Maybe Hephaistos will reject this. Reject him. But he cannot contain the wish any further.]
[As they entwine their fingers, Lahabrea decides to accept Themis' offer this time. While a small part of him remains fearful, Hephaistos has decided that he will not let Athena's shadow haunt him anymore. He was done living in the past, especially since he had a bright future ahead of him. This is why he accepts everything that Themis has to offer, including his soul.]
I accept. [He tightens his hold around Themis' fingers.] Only if you allow me to bare everything to you in return, Themis.
[Elation brightens that young face, bringing back a light that exhaustion and weariness cannot extinguish. He gives Hephaistos's hand a gentle squeeze, smile wide, before giving an admission. It does not shame him - he is recovering, after all, but... regardless-]
I lack the strength to initiate on my own, at present. My desire to go through with the act is undiminished, but I... will need your assistance.
[His smile grows slightly lopsided.]
But surely the mighty Lahabrea can spare a bit of his power to do so. Am I correct?
[He knows he is. And the teasing is far more like how Themis usually behaves with Lahabrea at times, breaking through his exhaustion. But he knows how it must begin, and speaks the words.]
You needn't ask, Themis, for everything I am is yours.
[Hephaistos has come a long way from the man he was following Athena's betrayal to the man he is today. That much is clear as he looks lovingly at Themis with joy. His former self would never have agreed to share his soul with Themis in this way, not while his heart was still aching from betrayal. However, all of that is in the past as he allows his aether to flare. While his aether burns hot like a torrent of fire, these flames are shockingly gentle, much like the summery rays of sunlight.
The warmth spreads between them until all of Themis is engulfed within it. Lahabrea intends to supplement his beloved's aether in the hopes of giving him the strength to continue with this ritual. While a tinge of trepidation lingers over him, Lahabrea ignores it in favor of staring into those brilliant blue eyes.]
As I am to become you.
[Perhaps this ritual will fully erase the rot that Athena implanted within him. The seeds of discord will not flourish here, not during his second chance at life. He intends to share the rest of his eternity with Themis.]
[From between their held hands blooms gleaming magic. It grows, a sphere of blues and blacks, the center almost white - almost like a nebula. Beautiful, as was the sharing about to happen. It swells with the power between them, and the connection is made. They are engulfed, and their bodies overtaken by the light.]
All that I am... my heart and more.
[Indeed the feeling is mutual. Everything they are, felt as if it were their own. Elidibus-Themis pours of himself freely, to share every moment of his own since the last time Lahabrea-Hephaistos had seen him in life. The memories flow thickly.
The sacrifice. Becoming Him.
The disputes after, withdrawing from Him once more.
Those who had been sacrificed, crying out within his mind.
Hydaelyn. A battle of titans.
The Sundering.
A Source and Thirteen Shards, what had become of all those he had loved. Save for Emet-Selch, save for Lahabrea. Becoming Ascians.
The Ardor, the Great Work. The loss of the Thirteenth to the void. The rejoinings.
Bringers of Chaos. Calamities. Four dimensional chess on a massive world-wide scale.
Rising up as Elidibus, grooming and becoming heroes. Working with and against the others. A balance of Light and Dark.
His memories, slowly slipping away, until all that remained was Duty. Was a promise.
The tale of the Warrior of Light, their clashes. His defeat. Giving all of himself to send that Hero back through time, to their own age. The unerworld, a breath to take in, his memories regained.
Pandaemonium in the present age. Athena's true machinations. Her manipulation of Erichthonios in truth. Themis's own part to play.
Claudien. Erichthonios reborn with sundered soul.
Their star saved in perhaps the only way it could have been. Their sacrifice holding meaning.
A final goodbye, easing back to the aetherial sea. Rest, no regrets despite all he had done.
Awakening here, in Amani.
Meeting the others once more. Meeting Hephaistos once more.
Then the joining moves beyond the past. This is something more.
There is no pain, no memories of previous deeds and tragedy lurking between them. Not now. Instead there is the beating heart of Themis, pulled apart for Hephaistos to inspect every element - to feel each and every inch of who he truly is. What he feels. The connection they had forged eons past - as colleagues, friends, now lovers - that continues even to this day, to this moment, and how strong it held, the depth of it running to the very heart of him.
And it is Love.
Trust.
Devotion, joy, protectiveness, vulnerability, all of these and more.
A thousand emotions, a thousand experiences - all of them cast in this same light.
Borne aloft on these feelings, Themis shows Hephaistos all of himself - exactly what he means to him, spurred on by the desire for the other man to know him. The two of them are beautiful lights, the aurora of their souls blended until there are no boundaries left. Their bodies folded together in that embrace upon the couch as their souls are entwined.
Themis does not pull back, pull out. He shows and he Sees and he Feels.
[As the two of them begin this process, Hephaistos is greeted with a myriad of colors. Merging one's soul with another is always a tricky process. It's borderline dangerous because it's so easy to lose yourself during this process. However, Hephaistos is well aware of the risks and is eager to proceed. He shares everything with Themis, including his hopes, dreams, and fears. While a part of him is still afraid of rejection, Hephaistos is already aware that Themis has accepted him. This is why he allows the other to delve deep into his soul, allowing him to see everything about himself through a crystal-clear lens.
Themis witnesses all of Lahabrea's past and present accomplishments, including a glimpse of a young Hephaistos before Athena's blight. His red gaze is bright and full of life, with no hint of scorn. He looks very different from the old man who sits before him now, more like his would-be son. At this age, Hephaistos was less cautious than his older self, and he was willing to take risks even if they failed. He remained stern, but he was much more easily moved to laughter when the occasion called for it. His youthful gaze is eventually obscured by Athena's deception, and his demeanor changes over time as she works her poison into him. Even during this difficult time, there were glimmers of joy, one of which was Hephaistos' first opportunity to hold his beloved son. He hums a lullaby to Erichthonios, always grateful for the rare opportunity to be alone with him. Hephaistos smiles as those tiny hands touch his cheeks, looking very much like a doting young father.
As the memory fades, an unfamiliar voice speaks in a deep brassy tone. Themis would not recognize this person because it was far beyond his time, but Hephaistos would, as this quote has stayed with him his entire life.
"Remember, Hephaistos, true happiness can be found in the tiniest of things."
As memories fade from this precious scene, Themis is rewarded with a fleeting glimpse of a young Hephaistos standing on a ledge next to an elderly gentleman with long gray hair. The older of the two is seated on a boulder, his black robbed back to the viewer. While little of him can be seen, the outline of his face suggests that he is related to Hephaistos in some way, especially since the old man resembles Hephaistos' older self. The only difference was the pale amber glow of his eyes.
"When I return to the Star, they will most likely look to you to lead it. Pray, remember that true happiness can be found in the tiniest of things. Not everything needs to be so grand, Hephaistos."
The scene shifts yet again, this time to a much older and haggard looking Hephaistos gazing back at Athena. As the two of them attempt to merge their souls together, a cloud of darkness descends upon him. The feelings of an insatiable hunger suddenly builds within him, a hunger that craves knowledge and power. It builds and builds until Hephaistos suddenly severs the link between him and her. As Athena scolds him for not fully accepting her, Hephaistos digs deep within himself and rips the darkness out of him without a second thought.
He has lost all of his emotions, including love, happiness, and sorrow. Hephaistos tore himself apart in an attempt to overcome the madness that Athena inflicted on him. Hephaistos' shoulders are filled with a strange sense of emptiness after using the last remnants of his power to kill Athena with his bare hands. The act is quick and shockingly effective. It's a dark memory, one that Hephaistos tried countless times to forget. As he stands before Athena's corpse, his gaze shifts towards the young boy passed on the floor.
He did it all for him. To save him.
From here the memories come and go, some of which are too disjointed to make out due to his fractured mind. However, the last image of Lahabrea gazing up at the night sky is a haunting one as a terrible scream erupts from the dark. Little did any of them realize that scream with herald the beginning of the end, but it certainly did.
His memories of that time are erased, replaced by the confusion that accompanied his arrival in Amani. All of his hardships, including the deep jealousy he felt while watching his colleagues meander with these nameless others, are revealed to Themis. However, such negative emotions seem to quell as the bond between them strengthens. It's a long journey, one with many ups and downs, but now Themis has his wish.
He is one with Hephaistos, and he is dearly loved.
The strain of his union is visible on his face, but Hephaistos refuses to stop.]
[Their bond deepens, strengthening. Stronger now than any material their people's vaunted architects would use to construct the most important of buildings, able to endure both time and fate itself. Such a bond remained, even at their most frayed.
But now? Now there was no possibility of it thinning. Fraying. Themis would not allow such a thing - and neither will Hephaistos, as they stay joined despite the strain. Despite their fatigue. They both dig deep into wells of strength to prolong this wondrous thing.
It cannot last forever, alas. Themis and his fleeting strength is the first to cede - and as he makes to unravel the two of them from one another, he goes with a final impression of love, of care. This is a cessation of the act, yes, but he leaves with a promise, that it will not be the last or only time.
When they do part, Themis opens his eyes, looking up at Hephaistos with a bone-deep weariness, but also a soul-deep affection. He speaks, his voice soft and low.]

Date: 2023-08-05 04:35 am (UTC)The blueprints had been drawn up by Lahabrea and himself jointly, the floor plan to the other man's tastes.

Date: 2024-06-03 05:48 am (UTC)It is Elidibus, unannounced.
He waits.]

He hesitates there, in the doorway.]

Date: 2024-06-04 12:26 pm (UTC)[The words are spoken faster than he can process them.

Date: 2024-06-04 08:00 pm (UTC)[Themis is all too aware of exactly what had happened during his mental break.
We have much to discuss together.

Date: 2024-06-05 03:00 am (UTC)This was a desperate attempt to save a dying planet. There was no time for perfection, but by creating Zodiark, he ensured their Star's continued existence. He falls quiet, his anger dissipating into something akin to grief.]

Date: 2024-06-05 03:19 am (UTC)And an absolution.]
[He pauses, now.]
Know you the reason why I lost myself slowly?

Date: 2024-06-05 03:34 am (UTC)As he leans back against the sofa cushions, Lahabrea lets out what appears to be a sigh. He is relieved, but there is still one issue they need to address. He returns his gaze to Themis, imploring him to speak.]
I...I have my opinions, but I rather hear the truth from you.

Date: 2024-06-05 03:48 am (UTC)When fully half our world gave of themselves to bring about Zodiark, their souls did not vanish.

Date: 2024-06-06 06:02 am (UTC)[For several heartbeats Themis is quiet, still.

Date: 2024-06-11 11:16 am (UTC)[Hephaistos has come a long way from the man he was following Athena's betrayal to the man he is today.

And he Loves.
He waits for Hephaistos to catch up.]

Date: 2024-06-21 06:24 pm (UTC)Themis witnesses all of Lahabrea's past and present accomplishments, including a glimpse of a young Hephaistos before Athena's blight.
IT'S BEEN 3000 YEARS
Date: 2024-09-17 08:49 am (UTC)But now?
